Humble Burn is an interdisciplinary architecture and design practice.

We approach projects with a sensitivity of perception and an intimacy of engagement.

Our research takes a broad view to find unexpected specificity in sites and stakeholders. We then combine our sensibilities with those in appropriate disciplines such as fine art, literature, film, anthropology, psychology and geology; to build projects with depth, excitement, intrigue and identity.

Our motivation is both within the pursuit of unknowns and our ethical responsibility towards: ecology, wellbeing, community engagement and cultural representation. We use our reading and articulation of material, light and time to implement these values.

Director

Dean VanderVord is from the borders of northern post-industrial counties; between cities, nations and cultures which have fostered a broad, layered and inquisitive perspective.

He holds architecture degrees at bachelors and masters level, graduating from The University of Westminster School of Architecture in 2016. There he returned for several years to sit on design review panels, providing critique and exchanging ideas on innovative practice. His academic work centres on geo-political strategies and material techniques, to address head on, complex issues of our time within the contexts of Lampedusa and Gaza.

Professionally he worked at acclaimed architecture studios including Red Deer in Shoreditch, London and EMBT in El Gotico, Barcelona. During this time he led numerous award winning commercial projects within the hospitality and retail sectors as well as gaining extensive experience in private residential design.
